After hanging up their cleats, life after football varies for every player. The “Life After Football” series, presented by Pro Football Retired Players Association (PFRPA), is dedicated to highlighting the diverse stories of retired NFL players and their lives after the game. Regardless of when or how long they played, football has taught every player valuable lessons and shaped their careers beyond the playing field.
Retired NFL Player and PFRPA Member Michael Bankston played nine seasons as a defensive end with the Arizona Cardinals and Cincinnati Bengals from 1992 to 2000. Selected by the Cardinals in the fourth round of the 1992 NFL Draft, Bankston also had a brief “cup of coffee” with the Washington Commanders in 2001, shortly before officially retiring. Before entering the NFL, he played college football for Sam Houston State University, where he earned a degree in business management.
Following his playing career, Bankston has continued to stay involved in the community. He serves as CEO of the Bankston Mattox Foundation, Inc.; sits on the boards of multiple non-profit organizations; and supports at-risk youth through after-school programs. He is currently Chapter President of the NFLPA Phoenix Former Player Chapter, where he ensures his fellow retired NFL players are aware of resources like the PFRPA Dental and Vision Plans, and frequently attends Arizona Cardinals community events.
