Recognizing World Mental Health Day
Oct 10, 2024
World Mental Health Day, observed on October 10 each year, is a global initiative aimed at raising awareness about mental health issues and promoting mental well-being.
What is Mental Health?
Mental health refers to emotional, psychological and social well-being. It encompasses how we think, feel and behave in daily life. It influences our ability to cope with stress; relate to others; and make decisions.
Good mental health allows individuals to navigate challenges; maintain fulfilling relationships; and pursue their goals. It is essential at every stage of life, from childhood through adulthood and aging.
What is World Mental Health Day?
Established by the World Federation for Mental Health in 1992, World Mental Health Day is a platform to advocate for mental health education; reduce stigma; and encourage access to mental health care.
World Mental Health Day seeks to create a world where mental health is prioritized alongside physical health, ultimately improving the quality of life for everyone.
Why is World Mental Health Day Important?
World Mental Health Day serves as a reminder of the link between mental health and overall well-being, emphasizing that good mental health is just as essential as physical health. It is an important day for many reasons, including the opportunity to:
- raise awareness about mental health issues, helping to reduce stigma and misconceptions that often surround them;
- promote open conversations about mental health and encourage individuals to seek help without fear of judgment; and
- emphasize the need for access to mental health services and resources.
